Metalsmith Sher Novak creates objects and jewelry that express her appreciation of form and texture. She especially loves to use the foldforming technique; a method of folding, hammering, and unfolding flat sheet metal to transform it into three dimensions. The resulting foldforms can vary from simple to very intricate shapes. They show the marks of both the folds and of the hammers she uses to make them.
Sher is inspired by the natural world, and influenced by nature’s structural relationships: proportion, pattern, repetition, gradation, and geometry. She loves to experiment with materials, often combining traditional metalsmith techniques with sewing and knotting to make unique mixed media jewelry and sculpture.
Since earning a BFA in Jewelry/MetalArts from the California College of the Arts in 2015, Sher has received recognition from the Society of North American Goldsmiths for “Best Mechanism” in their annual exhibit “WE ARE SNAG: Anthology Ed.4." She has received multiple Jurors’ Choice awards in the annual Lewton-Brain Foldforming Competition; and was awarded First Prize in the jewelry category at “Art in the Redwoods” at the Gualala Art Center in 2025.
