Barbara Poole

Painting, printmaking (etching), and small books

My paintings and etchings are a response to what I see and think. Often they are narrative and realistic, and just as often I make work that is more directed by the process.

Primarily I am a printmaker, although I paint in oil, watercolor, and gouache.  These past two years I have made etchings that then become the images in intricately folded and stitched books.  The images are reflections of what my year has brought, and often tell the story of my day or my family and friends.

The challenge of making etchings and the satisfaction of solving technical issues are fascinating to me.  There are endless opportunities to combine processes that yield different results.  The process as I do it is very old, and I like the idea that I am connected to the past as I work in the ways of the masters from the 16th and 17th centuries.  In between the precise and process-driven making of etchings I usually paint or experiment.  It brings me pleasure to work between the various methods, and often this work inadvertently will lead me to where I am going next.
