Jane Casner Mothersill

     While always having a keen interest in international cultures and art, my development as a practicing artist has been inexorably tied to my life arc and experiences. After graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in humanities and international affairs, I moved to the Philippines where I began pursuing Chinese brush painting. Upon my return to the US, I studied painting, drawing and sculpture full time at the Art Students League of New York and, subsequently, was awarded a full merit scholarship to attend the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy - where I received an MFA in studio art in 1990. My education has also included studying with a wide range of practicing artists, both in the US during the 1980s and thereafter in France after I relocated to Tokyo and Hong Kong to live from 1990 to 2005.

     I have participated in over 35 exhibitions in the US, Japan, Hong Kong, France and the Philippines, including 10 solo shows, and have received numerous awards for my work.

     I reside full time at Sea Ranch, CA where my principal studio is located, but also spend summers painting in the Loire Valley in France – where I have maintained a home and studio for 30 years in a small village with a significant international artist population.   

For me, creation is both an emotional and technical exercise. I paint what I love or am drawn to – whether it be landscape, still life or figurative work. But, having been classically trained in art history, composition/drawing, media/color, and old master techniques/methods, I also work to apply a rigorous framework in completing my subjects – with a goal of producing work that is both fresh and timeless.

     Living on the Sonoma coast is a blessing both personally and artistically. I am passionate about exploring this incredible environment we share whether hiking, biking, or painting – and profit every day from the incredible visual bounty that nature provides. At the same time, I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of our inclusive, supportive and vibrant artistic community. What an enviable place to be an artist!
