My large-scale landscapes and figurative work use natural and man-made forms to anchor the viewer in the real world while encouraging contemplation of the metaphysical one. Starting with words or phrases collected from dreams, conversation, literature and even scientific journals, I work toward a visual translation that may take the form of elegy, commentary or imagined myth.

I work primarily in oils, often combined with cold wax. The wax gives the paint a sculptural quality that yields rich and varied surfaces, from impasto to smooth buffed layers.

A midwesterner by birth, I was raised in upstate New York and Virginia. After earning a degree in art history from Swarthmore College, I lived and worked in Boston for many years before transferring to the Bay Area. Now retired, I have a studio in Anchor Bay and sit on the board of the North Coast Artists Guild.
