A lifelong artist, I have had the pleasure of exploring many art forms and many different mediums. I began studying pastels in 2011 following more than two decades as a sculptor, using clay, stone and concrete. I was attracted to the softness of pastel, the purity of color and the immediacy of its use. Since it had been many years since I had painted, I began taking classes in this beautiful medium with the likes of Marsha Connell, Mira White, Clark Mitchell, Dawn Emerson and Jeanne Rosier-Smith. It was this later class that sparked my current passion for painting waves. I feel I have found exactly what I am meant to do at this time in my life. More recently I have studied with Liz Haywood-Sullivan, including an inspiring workshop in Venice in the Fall of 2019. I am blessed to have lived more than 40 years on the North Coast of California, where I visit the ocean and the many rivers on a frequent basis. Inspiration is all around me: the ever changing water and sky, the exceptional quality of color and light, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Water is a strong theme in my artwork. This is the natural result of having been blessed with a childhood centered around water activities on the Chesapeake Bay. I grew up in a sailing family which gave me perhaps a unique affinity for water and sky and all manner of weather. Each time I begin a water-themed subject I am returned to that experience of my youth: the slapping sails and plunging hull, the wind ruffling my hair, the sun on my skin or the rain lashing my face. It is pure ecstasy to revisit that time in the quiet of my studio.
